The Unknown Soldier and Other Poems by Archie Weller
Archie Weller's verse has been described as the poetry of the underdog and in this he is merely reiterating in more passionate metre the theme of most of his prose. Nancy Keesing, who described his book of collected short stories "Going Home" as a "predestined classic", added that she found it difficult to read more than one story at a time because of the disturbing effect they had on her.Nevertheless, this is not a collection dedicated to doom and gloom. In addition to sadness, condemnation of injustice and realisation of futility, there is considerable humour and a rather naive tenderness in some of the love poems written over thirty years ago. The bracket of four poems from which the book takes its title is, the publishers believe, quite outstanding and, to echo Nancy Keesing's words, a predestined classic.
