Althateme (McGrath's Dam) by Shirley Turner and Amanda Turner
“There is a place on the north Stuart highway,
50 kilometres, not far from town.
It’s a meeting place, a home,
A place where family and friends gather round.”
Althateme (McGrath's Dam) is a poem about a very special apmere (country). The site of Land Rights protests that started in 1985, McGrath's Dam has deep cultural and historical significance for families of Mpweringke Anapipe north of Mparntwe (Alice Springs). This beautiful Central/Eastern Arrernte and English book invokes memories of a joyful childhood, love of family, culture and apmere (Country), brought to life by vibrant illustrations.
