Jane Lloyd's review of 'Deep Time Dreaming: Uncovering Ancient Australia' by Billy Griffiths

A deservedly multi award winning book! Beautifully written narrative non-fiction.

A book that seeks to understand the extraordinary deep history of the Australian continent and what it means to live in a place of such antiquity with complex relationships. To imagine standing with your back to the caves once occupied at Rocky Cape and imagine a time when people walked dry shod across Bass Strait. Griffith eloquently writes about the reassertion of Aboriginal identity and the uncovering of the traces of ancient Australia in the second half of the twentieth century.

He charts the history, relationships, scholarship and sometimes controversy of the archaeologists involved in uncovering Australia’s deep human past.

Billy Griffiths is sensitive and respectful to the achievements and concerns of Aboriginal people and to the complexities and technical difficulties of archaeological practice. These modern day discoveries changed our historical imagination and the way we see Australian history. One of the best books I have read.
