'gather together' and other news - Red Kangaroo Books

Greetings/Werte

We've been loving have you all join us for our Wednesday lunch 'gather together' conversation series, a big thanks to John Spencer and Tanya Heaslip for this week's enthralling conversation - John, thank you for sharing your story - you are an inspiration and we can all learn a lot from your life journey! Tanya, thank you for being such a wonderful host and guiding the conversation so perfectly. If you missed the session you can watch the recording here - and follow this link to purchase John's memoir, On both sides of the fence.

This week we 'gather together' with Watch This Space Artists - Victoria Alondra and Spandu Pillarisetty for a conversation about the poetics of (dis)location.

‘gather together’ is a conversation series curated by Louise Omer taking place in-store on Wednesdays (1 – 2pm) in April with incredible local writers and artists. Take your lunch-break here and hear vibrant discussions about poetry, culture, collaboration and meaningful social change. Thank you to Alice Springs Town Council for making this event possible via a Todd Mall Activation Grant.

We are excited to unveil our new website this week - check it out https://redkangaroobooks.au/ - and along with our new website comes a new email address - info@redkangaroobooks.au!

It's been a massive collective effort - big shout out and thank you to Samuel Druce* from Reelwire Productions for navigating it all with such professionalism and patience and Thor F. Jensen, thank you for the brilliant illustrations and more!

As you know sometimes the integration of a new website takes some finessing so please if something's not quite right please let us know ... including the typos!

If you're reading this newsletter you probably don't need any more evidence ... but we always enjoy reading about why reading books is good for us, please enjoy this piece from The Conversation - Why reading books is good for society, wellbeing and your career.

Enjoy your week and best Kanga wishes,

Bronwyn, John, Stephanie, Jo, Louise & Bernadette

*Full disclosure, Samuel is Bronwyn's very talented son.

Spikes on the bottom boots, my favourite colour boots, making me too deadly. Can the shoes on your feet really make you jump higher? Walk taller? Dream bigger? A joyous, empowering story about finding confidence within yourself, boots or no boots

(Lothian Children's Books)

'Judgement Day is a thrilling ride. I loved delving into the world of the courts - what a place to set a crime novel - the intrigue, the snobbery and the privilege. This book kept me up all night and I can't stop thinking about it.' - Margaret Hickey, author

Family law judge Kaye Bailey is found murdered in her chambers. I Detective Jillian Basset is just back from maternity leave, struggling with new motherhood as she tackles the biggest case of her career.

'Warm, funny, and bighearted, Kate Solly stitches together a cast of characters here who will restore your faith in people power.' - Cate Kennedy

‘A fun read with a deeper message … With engaging characters and some sharp observations about modern Australia, it’s both entertaining and enlightening’. Good Reading

(Affirm Press)

A highly personal new collection of short stories by Margaret Atwood.

... beloved cats, a confused snail, Martha Gellhorn, George Orwell, philosopher-astronomer-mathematician Hypatia of Alexandria, a cabal of elderly female academics, and an alien tasked with retelling human fairy tales and more ... the glorious range of Atwood's creativity and humanity is on full beam in these tales, which by turns delight, illuminate and quietly devastate.
