NT Writers Festival first announcement and more!

NT Writers Festival first announcement and more!

Greetings! Werte!

In these cooler mornings we like to think you are sitting back with the Red Kangaroo Books weekly newsletter with a nice of cup of tea! But, as you will know, we are always ready with a bit of obscure knowledge to share with you (bookshops are full of obscure knowledge, as you know!).

So! You should know that this Friday is recognised as International Tea Day! It’s an annual celebration started in 2005 by trade union movements in tea producing countries like India, Kenya and Vietnam. The day seeks to draw attention to the global tea trade and its impact on workers. It used to be held in December, before it was adopted by the UN in 2019 and scheduled for 21 May.

A bit of reading for your cuppa!

Enjoy!

NT Writers Festival revving up below the Berrimah Line!

26-29 August will see the NT Writers Festival returning (as it should!) to Mparntwe/Alice Springs for a four-day program of conversations, book talks, storied walks, launches, workshops and readings in the Olive Pink Botanic Garden. As a previous guest to the Festival , Morris Gleitzman, put it: “The perfect small festival…exactly the right atmosphere to explore big and complex ideas in the company of generous minds. All in a location reminding us that stories are the foundation of every civilisation.”

This year the Festival is thrilled to announce that Alice Pung, Craig Silvey, Nardi Simpson and Rick Morton are among the talented writers who will be appearing this year. More to come!

International Nurses Day

Here at Red Kangaroo Books we do try to mark important dates in the calendar, but we failed to note International Nurses’ Day last week. Apologies!

All of us have stories of the dedication of nurses in their personal treatment, as well as that of their loved ones. For many of our readers, we have very special memories of our remote area nurses … always on call, isolated and at times in danger. Indeed it applies to all of our health workforce, especially in these pandemic times. As one of our readers wrote, just on a year ago, recalling experiences across remote Australia:

Memories, as I write now, of a lone nurse one late night at an East Kimberly community clinic desperately and vainly trying to save the life of a heart attack victim – with no access to oxygen. Of Aboriginal health workers in central Arnhem Land only able to give paracetamol to cancer patients suffering unbearable pain. Of witnessing the existential pain of people with end stage kidney disease across the desert – unable to access dialysis, let along kidney transplantation. Of children in communities in the Roper River region, prematurely deaf from otitis media. Of mental health workers across so many communities faced with youth suicide. Of community workers dealing with the generational ravages of Foetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder.

So, yes, a tribute from us at Red Kangaroo Books to all our nurses and health workers.

Congratulations!

Green sheep for Old Blighty!

A great bit of news for a kid’s book that has been a long time favourite at Red Kangaroo Books: Where is the Green Sheep by Mem Fox and illustrated by Judy Horacek. In it, Mem Fox and Judy Horacek take you on a wildly wonderful adventure in their rollicking search for the green sheep.

Mem Fox is Australia’s most highly regarded picture-book author. Her first book, Possum Magic, is the bestselling children’s book ever in Australia, with sales of over three and a half million. Time for Bed is on Oprah’s list of the twenty best children’s books of all time. Mem has written over thirty picture books for children and five non-fiction books for adults. Judy Horacek is an Australian cartoonist, artist, writer, and children’s book creator.

The news? It is now available in the UK for the first time! Congratulations to both of them. All we need now is for them to write and illustrate a book about red kangaroos meeting green sheep!
